1802
Ralph Baker was the son of William and Mary (nee Bourne)
Baker (BAK00106).
Ralph was born in 1802. He was baptised at St
Peter Ad Vincula, Stoke on Trent on 31 October 1802.
Although William Baker IV was the elder brother (though he didn’t
marry), it was Ralph Bourne Baker was appears to have
been taken up by the Bournes.
Ralph was educated at Rugby and at Trinity College, Cambridge.
1830
He then entered the church. He was Rector of Hilderstone from 1830 and became rural dean of Stone in
1852 and examining chaplain to the Bishop of Meath from 1852 to 1872.
He was also a JP for Staffordshire and Gloucestershire.
1839
The Staffordshire Advertiser, 5 January 1839:
It will be seen by our advertising columns that the consecration
of the New Church, in this town, will take place on Thursday next. We trust
that a liberal collection will be made on the occasion, as we understand there
will be additional expenses of communion plate, and other fittings up with the
church, which will amount to nearly £200.
The church at Fenton, erected and endowed by the legacy of the
late Ralph Bourne, Esquire, and of which Lord Viscount Sandon and the Rev Ralph
Bourne Baker, are trustees, will also be consecrated on Friday the 11th
instant, by the Lord Bishop of Hereford. It is intended, the weather
permitting, to move in procession to the church from the house of William Baker
Esquire, at half past ten o’clock precisely. The advertisement in our first
page states that there will be a collection on the occasion. That is mistake;
there will not be any collection. We did not receive the letter requesting us
to correct that error until a late hour yesterday.
Unlike his rather taciturn unmarried brother William Baker IV, Ralph held forth at length and on one occasion
William had to stop him by saying I think you have talked enough.
Rev Ralph Fenton married Frances Crofton Singer, the Bishop of Meath’s daughter. They had a family of four
including their son, William Meath Baker, “WMB”, initials which later appeared
on the gates of the factories who was born on 1 November 1857.
