The Royal Military Academy Sandhurst was formed on the site of the
former Royal Military College in 1947 when it amalgamated with the Royal
Military Academy in Woolwich (founded in 1741 for the training of officers for
the Royal Artillery and Royal Engineers).
The site of Sandhurst since 1801 was for the training of officers
for arms other than the Royal Artillery and Royal Engineers.
The first intake to the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst (“RMAS”)
was Intake 1, with Intake 1A following and being concurrent with Intake 1.
Martin Farndale was a cadet in Dettingen Company, Intake 1A, so he
was a cadet at RMAS in its first years.
