John Farndale was baptised at Brotton on 24 March 1750, the son of John and Grace Farndale (FAR00143)(Skelton PR & IGI, BMD).

1795

John Farndale and Jane Pybus were married at Skelton, by Banns, on 23 December 1795
(Skelton PR & IGI - IGI entry states 1794). He was aged 45.

1809

 

John Farndale was a tenant farmer in Kilton in 1809.

 

The Skelton and Kilton Terrier in 1809 provided a detailed record of John’s tenanted farm.

A ‘terrier’ is a record of field names, with reference number, land use, acreage, value per acre and rent.

John Farndale died on 23 October 1825 aged 75 years (Mon R).

 

The Will of John Farndale reads: “In the Name of God Amen. I John Farndale of the Parish of Brotton in the North Riding of Yorkshire, Farmer, make this my last Will and Testament in manner and form as follows. First I desire that after the period of my decease all my funeral expenses and other debts be duly discharged by my within named Executor out of my personal estate. I then give devise and bequeath unto my wife Jane Farndale all the residue or remainder of my personal estate consisting of the stock and crops of the farm which I now rent, cash, household, furniture, linen, plate etc during the term of her life, or as long as she continues my widow. But after the said term or widowhood my Will is that the aforesaid personal estate be equally divided amongst my children to share and share alike.

I also nominate and appoint my brother-in-law, Robert Pybus, sole executor to this my last Will and Testament and I also hereby utterly revoke and disannul all former wills, legacies and bequests by me at any time made, and I declare this to be my last Will and Testament in witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand and seal this second day of September in the year of Our Lord, One Thousand eight Hundred and Twenty Eight.

1840

Jane Farndale, the widow of John Farndale of Brotton was buried on 18 November 1840, aged 70 (Brotton PR)
. Jane Farndale’s death was registered Guisborough in the last Quarter of 1840 (GRO Vol XXIV page 245).

The gravestone at Brotton Old Churchyard reads “Erected in Memory of John Farndale who died 23rd October 1825 aged 75 years. Also his wife Jane Farndale, who died 16th November 1840 aged 70 years. Also Mary their daughter who died in infancy.”
