Louisa
Farndale, daughter of John (a labourer living at Clements Place) and Elizabeth
(nee Walker) Farndale (FAR00365)
was born in York District on 6 July 1872 and
baptised on 1 August 1872 (St Mary, Bishophill the
Elder, York PR).
Louisa Farndale’s birth was registered in York
District in the third quarter of 1872 (GRO Vol 9d
page 20).

father, John Farndale died in 1874.

So Louisa’s mother, Elizabeth nee Walker had
remarried Christopher Walls after John Farndale died in 1874, and their two

Herald, 16 April 1889: YORK AND DISTRICT PUPIL TEACHERS’ EXAMINATION
ASSOCIATION. The first examination of the present year took place in the Priory
Street Wesleyan Boys’ School, when 89 pupil teachers and candidates,
representing 31 schools or departments of schools, offered themselves for
examination. This number, which is the largest ever presented at one time in
York, included 20 males and 69 females. The examiner, Mr W C Senior, had just
completed his inspection of the work done, and the following are those who have
succeeded in obtaining the first position in their several years of

Herald, 19 October 1889: YORK AND DISTRICT PUPIL TEACHER EXAMINATION
ASSOCIATION. The second examination of the present year was held in the Manor
School on Saturday last, when 72 pupil teachers from the various elementary
schools in this district sat for examination... The following pupil teachers
also obtained a high percentage of marks, and are deserving of honourable

Herald, 2 April 1890: YORK AND DISTRICT PUPIL TEACHER EXAMINATION
ASSOCIATION. At the first examination of the current year, held in the St.
Georges Wesleyan Schools, York, out of 76 candidates and pupil teachers who had
entered for the examination, 70 presented themselves to undergo the ordeal.
They represented 30 schools or department in the city and neighbourhood.... Third

Herald, 13 December 1890: PUPIL TEACHERS’ PRIZE DISTRIBUTION AT YORK. The tenth
annual distribution of prizes in connection with the Yorkshire District Pupil
Teachers Examination Association took place in the Lawrence’s schoolroom, York,
last evening. There was a public tea, to which about 100 sat down cover and
subsequently the prize distribution took place, being attended by an
entertainment of a pleasing character. The Lord Mayor had promised to preside,
but excused himself on the ground of pressure of other engagement... Candidates

Herald, 31 October 1891: PUPIL TEACHERS’ SCHOLARSHIP EXAMINATION. LOCAL
SUCCESSES. … pupil teachers who have been successful in passing the above examinations
which was held in July last. The number of candidates is larger than that of
any previous year, seeing that now all fourth year pupil teachers must take the
examination, whether they intend entering a training college or not. The
examination is now compulsory to all pupil teachers in England and Wales, from
both voluntary and board schools. 5,147 females and 1,808 males have been
successful, and the following are the successes of local candidates arranged in

Louisa Farndale, 35, married Henry Archie Young and
the marriage was registered in the third quarter of 1907 at Romford,
Essex (GRO Vol 4a page 953).
1911
Louisa
Young, 38, an elementary teacher, three and a half years married, lived at
Hornchurch, Essex.
1938
Louisa
Young died at Romford, Essex in 1938, aged 66, and her death was registered
there in the fourth quarter of 1938 (GRO Vol 4a page 388).
