In 1906,
aged 23, he left Liverpool on 3 April 1906 for Halifax on The SS Laurentian
of the Allan Line, captained by E Pitts. This was the same vessel the
Polynesian, which his father had sailed on in 1890, but which had been rebuilt
and renamed The
SS Laurentian in 1893. He was a labourer.
