She
joined her elder brothers and sister at the little school at Charltons, but unlike the rest she (and her
younger brother James) were the only two to go on to a private school at Guisborough. She would finish there in about 1900.

There is little doubt that her elder brothers were at this time talking about
Canada. She would have seen Martin and then George go in 1905 and 1906. When
her younger brother, James, decided to join her brothers in 1911, Kate (as she
was always known) decided to go too. Her mother had just died and her younger
sisters were now able to look after her father and younger brothers.

Hills, Alberta, Canada

on 13 February 1874 in Cheshire. For a number of years he lived on a dairy farm in the
United States. In 1904 he homesteaded 16 miles northwest of Three Hills.
His brother John and he bashed in a 12 foot by 14 foot shack. Later they built

Extarct from The
Histopry of Kneehill, 1968
Kate was strict in her standards. She
would not tolerate smoking or drinking alcohol. She was deeply religious and
set high standards of behaviour for her own family. There are many
stories of visitors going out to the barn for a drink or a smoke to avoid her
displeasure!

WEDDING – GOODBRAND-KINSEY. A Very
pretty wedding was solemnised at the Wimborne Alliance church on January 5th
at 2pm, when Dorothy Catherine, only daughter of Mr and Mrs William H Kinsey,
became the bride of AC1 W James Goodbrand, youngest son of Mr and Mrs
Alex Goodbrand of Lacombe. The bride, who was given in marriage by her father,
entered the church to the strains of Lohengrins wedding march played by Mrs
Chris Silversides. The bride was a charming picture in a floor length gown of
white triple sheer, her chapel veil being held in place by a heart shaped halo.
She carried a bouquet of roses and pink and white carnations. Miss Elsie Kalin
as bridesmaid, wore a floor length gown of pink sheer with matching halo hat
and she carried a bouquet of deep pink carnations. Little Wand Evans was an
enchanting flower girl in pink taffeta with touches of blue. The groom, who
joined the Air Force a year ago, was attended by Alfred Kinsey, brother of the
bride. The ceremony was performed by Rev Martin Bowker. During the signing of
the register, Mrs Bowker sang “God gave me you”. George Kinsey and Gustave
Carlson were ushers. Following the ceremony, a reception was held at the home
of the bride’s parents. Her table was cantered by a three tier wedding cake.
