Great Broughton

 

1892

 

William Farndale son of William Appleton (farm labourer of Great Broughton near Stokesley) and Ann (nee Robson) Farndale (FAR00283), was born in Great Broughton on 2 February 1892 and baptised at Kirkby in Cleveland on 4 March 1892. William Farndale’s birth was registered in Stokesley District in the first quarter of 1892 (GRO Vol 9d page 588).

 

When William Farndale was born on 2 February 1892 his father, William, was 69 and his mother, Ann, was 45.

1914

 

North Star (Darlington), 25 April 1914: SPORTING COMPETITION RESULT. The result of the above competition, wherein £10 was offered by the “North Star” to anyone forecasting the winners of the Great Metropolitan Stakes and City and Suburban Handicap, has been arrived at. remarkable interest was taken in the competition by the general public, this being evident by the fact that 63,457 coupons were sent in, and the task of checking these has been accomplished very smartly by members of the ‘North Star’ staff.... In all probability another similar competition will be promoted in the course of a week or two. The winners are as follows: … William farndale, Hazel house, Great Ayton ...

 

15271 Corporal William Farndale, the Yorkshire Regiment enlisted on 12 October 1914. His Medical History shows that he was from Great Broughton, a farm man. He was 5 feet and 7.5 inches tall. He enlisted at Stokesley on 12 October 1914. He was also at Ripon on 12 October 1914.

 

1915

 

Whitby Gazette, 8 January 1915: GREAT BROUGHTON AND KIRBY. During the past weekend, a party of the recruits from Great Broughton have spent their furlough in the village. Those who are present are... W Farndale. All of them showed a clean bill of health, and greatly enjoyed their leave amongst their friends.

 

William Farndale arrived in France 27th August 1915.

 

There was some news home a few weeks later.

 

Whitby Gazette, 8 October 1915: Private W H Millington, who has been in hospital, off and on, for months, is now almost well, and hopes shortly to go to the front. News has been received that Private W Farndale was drafted out to France a few weeks ago. In a letter to friends at Great Broughton, he jocularly remarks that, now he has gone, he has got the Germans on the run.

 

He joked that he had the Germans on the run.

 

1918

 

He served in France and Italy and came home on leave in August 1918:

 

Whitby Gazette, 30 August 1918: Private William Farndale, late of Great Broughton, arrived at his native village last weekend to spend his leave with Mr and Mrs R Reed, of Hill Cottage. Private Farndale enlisted soon after the outbreak of war, and has served both in France and Italy.

1919

William Farndale married Agnes E Longstaff in the second quarter of 1919 at Darlington District (MR). They had four children over ten years.

 

1920

 

In December 1920 he was invalided with a claim under Art 9 for 30% disablement.

 

1921

 

Cyril Ernest Farndale (FAR00872) (1921-1985) was born on 21 June 1921.

 

1922

 

Kenneth Farndale (FAR00884) (1922-1992) was born on 24 December 1922.

 

1923

1925

 

Ethel Doreen Farndale (FAR00895) was born in September 1925.

 

1932

 

Ronald Farndale (FAR00925) was born in Bedale on 25 April 1932.

 

1948

William Farndale, died age 56 at Leeds District in the first quarter of 1948. He died on 19 March 1948. He was a highways labourer of Main Street, Thorner, Wetherby. (DR)
