George James
Farndale was born on 2 February 1892 at Portfield in Sussex (death record). His parents have not yet been
identified, but see the Sussex Line
for further work to be done. He seems to
have been the grandson of Joseph Bridges, but I have not yet found a maternal
line linked to the Farndales with the Bridges surname. The reference could be
to God son not grandson, in which case he would not be related to Joseph
Bridges.
Since George
William Farndale (FAR00614)
regularly performed in Chichester, though he lived in Leeds, a possible
solution is that George James Farndale was related to the Great Ayton 2 line. However
the mystery is not easily solved.

Farndale, Royal Sussex Regiment, Portfield.

There is also a record
of his admission to 31st Ambulance Train on 8 November 1918 and
his discharge the same day. He was a Sergeant with B Company, Second Battalion,
the Royal Sussex Regiment.

George James
Farndale, 27, married Lavinia Florence Coombes on 12 October 1919 (Portfield PR) and the marriage was registered in
the fourth quarter of 1919 at Westhampnett, Sussex (GRO Vol 2b page 1117).
George’s father
is shown to be Joseph Bridges, but we have identified this was probably his
grandfather or godfather.

George Farndale
gave away Constance Burls at her wedding in 1925, and his daughter Joan
Farndale was a little bridesmaid.

Observer, 18 February 1925: WEDDING. A pretty wedding was solemnised at the Church of
Saint Peter the Great on Saturday. The Rev P R B Brown officiated. The bride
was Miss Constance May Burls, and the bridegroom Mr Albert Henry Coombes. The
bride was attended by two bridesmaids,, Miss J Farndale and Miss E Hood, and
was given away by Mr G J Farndale. The best man was Mr W Hoad. The happy
couple received numerous presents.

Observer, 30 April 1938: FUNERAL OF A YOUNG BOY. SAD DEATH AT CHICHESTER. The funeral
took place at Portfield parish church on Monday, of Alec Victor Boyce Coombs,
the 15 years old son of Mr and Mrs W Coombes, of 89 Victoria road, Chichester,
who died on April 21st after a long illness. The vicar, the Rev C E Weekes,
officiated at the service and the family mourners were: Mr and Mrs W Coombs,
father and mother; Miss Coombes, sister; Mr and Mrs G Farndale, Mr and Mrs V
Coombs, Mrs Brown and Mrs Mitchell, uncles and aunts and John Stares, his best
friend....
