Leeds Mercury, 14 July 1931:
A WAR VETERAN. The adage that old soldiers never die also applies to horses.
Dolly, who was first in the class for horses, ponies, donkeys
and mules over 15, was invalided out of the army 14 years ago, blinded by gas.
She was bought by Mr J S Smith, coal hawker, Spring Street, The Bank. She is
now 26 years old and blind. In spite of the fact that
she had led two loads of coal before going to the show, she ran Charlie very
close for the Tetley Cup. A new cup was presented by Harrison, Barber and Co Limited,
for the best horse in the market and hawkers’ classes. It was won by “Sunshine”,
a lively black pony, six years old, owned by Mr F Farndale, Beeston Royds.
The entries were a record again, the total of 127 being 22 more than last year.
Yorkshire Post and Leeds Intelligencer, 14 July 1931: WAR BLINDED HORSE WINS VETERANS’
PRIZE AT LEEDS RSPCA SHOW. Horses, ponies, and donkeys of all ages and sizes, from fine old cart horses of uncertain age, to diminutive
Shetland ponies, were included in the 157 entries for the 18th annual show
of the Leeds branch of the RSPCA, which was held on the drill ground at Carlton
Barracks, yesterday. All the animals, however, had only add one thing in
common, in that every one
works for its living, their owners for the most part being hawkers,
market carriers, and shopkeepers owning only one animal... The Hemingway
silver cup for the best light horse regularly working in Leeds was won by Messrs
Heaps, Arnold and Heaps, the driver being T Sutcliffe; and the Heaps Cup for
the best heavy horse was awarded to LMSR companies
entry, driven by J. Cole hill, “Sunshine” belonging to Mr F Farndale, of Beeston
Royds, secured the cup for the best horse in the market and hawkers classes...
