Lincolnshire Echo, 30 July 1946: DIRTY WATER CAUSES ‘LAZY’ DISEASE. [struggle in life among] Egyptian felahin, according to Major WHA Farndale, in a talk to Lincoln Rotarians yesterday, on life in the Middle East, is due to a disease called “bilharzia”, known to the troops as Bill Harris’s disease, contracted by washing in dirty canal water. If the Egyptians could break themselves of this .. habit, he said, the disease could be conquered and Egypt would become a powerful nation worthy of its ancestors… He explains that the felahin working near the Nile, where the land was extensively irrigated, had some of the richest soil in the world to cultivate. The soil was so rich that clover often yielded 50 to 60 tonnes to the acre over a period of a few month …. 80% of the felahin, he added, caught the “bilharzia” disease through a germ getting into their blood. “They catch this disease because they will use the canals as a sewer and then wash themselves in it …. A snail in the water stores up the deadly germs.” Rotarian G H Hes proposed the vote of thanks... and offered the club's congratulations to the speaker's father, Rotarian the Rev W E Farndale, on his election as president of the Methodist Church.

Lincolnshire Echo, 8 August 1946: EGYPTIAN LIFE. Sir. In reply to the letter by Captain Borrell on the report of my recent talk to the Rotary Club, I am glad to see that he shares with me an interest in Egypt. I agree with him on many of the points to which he referred and indeed mentioned some of them in my talk. Lack a space, however, prevented the Echo including my references to the courtesy and hospitality of the people, the two social classes, the work of the poor, and their religion, the easy and frequent divorces, and other characteristics. As he will readily recognise, a 20 minutes talk on the Middle East, covering, as it did, a sketch of impressions relative to South Africa, Egypt and Greece, could not be expected to enlarge in detail up on any one of these countries. My facts and deductions with regard to the disease of bilharzia were checked and confirmed by scientific workers of the highest repute. To state a scientific fact and show its implications is not to be unfriendly, but rather to show the way to an improvement in the health, vigour and well-being of so many of those unfortunate Egyptians who do suffer from this disease. W A J Farndale. London.
