Huddersfield Daily
Examiner, 24 August 1978: … More and more vehicles are
taking to the roads with potential disasters aboard, but as
yet their near impeccable safety record has held. In Huddersfield, a number of people are concerned that the safety record will
be upheld and are determined that disasters such as the Spanish holiday camp
horror will not happen here. … Mr George Farndale, Group Training Officer
for the Kirkbuton based Sykes Group, said “Our
own checks are done very frequently. We have monthly inspections of all our
vehicles by trained mechanics, and any faults are rectified immediately. In
addition, the drivers sometimes notice defects while on the road and these are
repaired as soon as they are reported. All the loading and unloading equipment
is regularly maintained, and all our vehicles are subjected to the yearly MOT
tests for road worthiness. Any work that we are called to do involving
chemicals involves more precautions, and we meet with the company concerned
beforehand to arrange for special protective clothing to be provided if
necessary.”...
