1830
Robert Farndale was baptised 15 May 1830 at Brotton,
the son of George & Mary Farndale (FAR00215)
of Brotton, labourer (Brotton PR & IGI).
1841
In the Census
of 1841 for Brotton: Robert
Farndale, aged 11; born in Yorkshire was living at Kilton with his grandfather,
William and Mary, both 80, a farmer and his aunt,
Anna. We know that William took steps to look after the welfare of George’s
family probably due to his illness.
1846
When his grandfather William died in 1846, Robert received a silver
watch and a legacy of £20 to spend on clothing during his apprenticeship. Money
was also put in trust to look after his father who was obviously not well.
The Will of
William Farndale read: This is the Last Will and Testament of me
William Farndale, … I give and bequeath my
silver watch unto my Grandson Robert Farndale (FAR00307). I give and bequeath
unto my son Matthew Farndale (FAR00225)
the sum of twenty pounds Upon Trust to layout and expend the same in clothing
to and for the use of my said Grandson Robert Farndale during his apprenticeship at such
times and in such manner as my said son the said Matthew Farndale shall think
proper and expedient.
And I give and bequeath unto my sons John Farndale (FAR00217), the said Matthew
Farndale and Martin Farndale (FAR00236),
the sum of One Hundred pounds upon trust to apply the same, or any
interest which may arise therefrom in case my said three sons should place out
or invest the said sum of One Hundred pounds at interest in providing Board
Lodging Clothing or Medical attendance to and for my son George Farndale (FAR00215) at such times and in
such manner as my said three children shall think proper, provided always, and
I declare and direct that in case my said three sons, the
said John Farndale, Matthew Farndale and Martin Farndale shall think it
expedient to lay out or expend the said sum of One Hundred pounds in any other
manner than is hereinbefore mentioned, in favour of
my said son George Farndale. I hereby authorise and
empower them so to do, it being my Will and intention
that my said three sons shall have the complete control, management
and expenditure of the said principal sum of One Hundred pounds and
interest if any. …
(Yorkshire Wills)
1851
In the Census of 1851 for Loftus: Robert Farndale, aged 20; was
unmarried and an apprentice joiner and cartwright with John Walker, a
cartwright of Loftus.
1861
In the Census
of 1861 Robert Farndale, 28, an unmarried lodger, a cordwainer lived at 17
Park Row Stockton.
A cordwainer is an artisan
trained in the technical aspects of crafting a shoe from scratch.
1875
There is a Robert Farndale who
died at Birmingham and buried at Key Hill Cemetery in 1875, but I’m not sure if
this was him.
