Newcastle Courant, 10 April 1857: Middlesbrough, April 3. Fire broke out this morning, at three o’clock, on board the Hydrus, Shapter, of Exeter. Captain Shapter, accompanied by captain Tregonna, of the Perseverance, also of Exeter, went on board the Hydrus at one am, at which time there was no sign of fire. At the time above mentioned the fire was discovered by Mr W Farndale, assistant tide surveyor, then on duty, who, together with Mr C Smith, rendered every assistance. The fire broke out in the state room, and was quickly got under without much damage being done to the vessel. Captain Tregonna, who was missed during the fire, was afterwards discovered in the cabin burnt to a cinder.
