Masterman Farndale, the son of John and Martha (nee Patton) Farndale (FAR00217) of Skelton Barnes Farm was baptised at Skelton on 24 March 1831 (Skelton
PR).
John was then a farmer.

William Farndale, age 10; son of John Farndale,
born Yorks, (ie born 1831). He was living with
his widowed father John, a farmer, and siblings.
Middlesbrough
1856
William Masterman Farndale of full age, Officer of
HM Customs of Middlesbrough, son of
John Farndale, a merchant, married Jane Brownbridge of full age, a spinster of Middlesbrough by licence, daughter of
Thomas Brownbridge, an Office of the Inland Revenue, at the Parish Church
Middlesbrough, on 18 November 1856 (Marriage Certificate).
William and Jane signed. The witnesses were Anne Maria Farndale (presumably
this was his sister, FAR00334)
and John Trenholm. Richard Bradley was the Vicar. William was aged 27 at his
marriage.
York
Herald, 22 November 1856: MARRIAGES. FARNDALE – BROWNBRIDGE, Nov, 18th,
at Middlesbro’, Mr Wm M Farndale to Miss Jane Brownbridge.
Hartlepool
1857
In
1857, William Farndale saved a steamer at Hartlepool.
Newcastle
Courant, 10 April 1857: Middlesbrough, April 3. Fire broke out this
morning, at three o’clock, on board the Hydrus, Shapter, of Exeter. Captain
Shapter, accompanied by captain Tregonna, of the
Perseverance, also of Exeter, went on board the Hydrus at one am, at which time
there was no sign of fire. At the time above mentioned the fire was
discovered by Mr W Farndale, assistant tide surveyor, then on duty, who,
together with Mr C Smith, rendered every assistance. The fire broke out in
the state room, and was quickly got under without much damage being done to the
vessel. Captain Tregonna, who was missed during the
fire, was afterwards discovered in the cabin burnt to a cinder.
1857
Charles Masterman Farndale (FAR00429) was born
at Middlesbrough in 1857 (GRO
Vol 10a page 34) and baptised on the Wesleyan Methodist
circuit at Middlesbrough on 25 November 1857 (Middlesbrough
PR).

Ann Maria Farndale (FAR00444) was born in 1861
when the family lived at Cleveland Port and baptised on 26 August 1861 at Ormesby
(Ormesby
PR).
In
the birth record of his daughter who was baptised at Ormesby in August 1861,
William was described as a tide waiter of Cleveland port.
A
tide waiter is an officer in various preventive
customs services who boards ships and watches the landing of goods.
Ormesby
is now SE Middlesbrough.

William Henry Farndale (FAR00466), son of
William Masterman Farndale Revenue Officer and Jane Farndale, formerly
Brownbridge, was born on 26 June 1865 and baptised on 10 July 1865 at Ormesby (Ormesby
PR, Birth Certificate)
