May 1919: A FARMER
STONED AT BEESTON. At the Leeds Police Court, today, *, * and Alfred Farndale,
21, 10 Near Royds, where charged with assaulting John E Blakey. Mr Norman
Elliott said the complainant was a was 60 years of age, and carried on a
business as a farmer and market gardener at Beeston. On April 24 he saw the
three defendants trespassing in his field. He ordered them to leave, which they
did. The youths returned almost immediately and complainant was struck by a
volley of stones thrown by the defendants. One of the stones caught him on the
left side of the head and knocked him unconscious. * said he and his companions
had been rat catching. When ordered to go away they did so, but Mr Blakey threw
a stone at one of the dogs and afterwards threw a stone at them. Defendants
were bound over for £5 for 12 months, and also ordered to pay 20s, each
compensation.
