By 1950, he was at Freeborough Farm, Moorsholm, and witnessed a tragedy involving
his neighbouring farmer. The Cleveland Standard, 11
August 1950: FARMER IS FOUND SHOT IN FIELD. A well
known Cleveland farmer, …, aged 61, of Haredale
Farm, Moorsholm, was found dead in a field a short distance from his home last
Thursday. At the inquest conducted by the Cleveland Coroner, Mr Bernard
Wilkinson, on Friday, a verdict of “Death from internal haemorrhage resulting
from a gunshot wound, self-inflicted while the balance of his mind was
disturbed”, was returned. Ernest William Farndale, of Freeborough Farm,
Moorsholm, told the coroner that after Mrs Newton had called about 1:50 pm
on Thursday, seeking her husband, he went with Albert Dale, of 31 Southampton
Street, Redcar, to look around the field. It was nearly 3 pm when they found
Newton lying about 20 yards outside the boundary of his farm, and he was then
dead. There was a gun lying near him with a piece of string fastened to the
trigger and the other end attached to a bush. Farndale said that a week
previous to the tragedy he was talking to Newton, who remarked that he was
worried about the damage being done to his farm by rabbits. He then estimated
is it equivalent to a year's rent of the farm...
