1801

William Farndale, son of John & Jane Farndale (FAR00196) of Craggs House, Brotton, farmer, was born on 9 August 1801, and baptised at Brotton on 9 September 1801 (Brotton PR & IGI).

The Census records all suggest William was born between 1808 and 1811. However on checking, there are no records of a William born in those years. So it is reasonable to conclude that the census records must relate to William born in 1801. For whatever reason (mistake or purpose?) he seems to have overstated his age in the census by about 10 years in 1841, later tempered back to about six or seven years.

1841

William Farndale, married Jane Scott (born in 1826 at Hartlepool) on 31 May 1841 at the Chapelry
Brotton (Brotton PR).

William Farndale of full age, a bachelor, labourer of
Brotton, son of John Farndale, farmer, married by banns Jane Scott, of full age, a spinster of Kilton, daughter of James Scott a labourer at the Chapelry Brotton, on 31 May 1841. William signed, Jane made her mark. Witnesses William Foster and Ellen Robinson. William Close, Incumbent.

1856

William George Farndale (
FAR00421) was born in or around Brotton 22 Jun 1856 (Brotton PR).

1860

William Farndale was a tenant at Ladgates Farm, which was sold at auction by its owner, a ‘gentleman’, in 1860:

Yorkshire Gazette, 21 July 1860: YORKSHIRE – NORTH RIDING. IN AUGUST NEXT will be SOLD BY PUBLIC AUCTION (unless previously disposed of by Private Contract), in Lots, the LIFE INTEREST of a GENTLEMAN, aged 40 in March last, in the following Property: THE MANOR HOUSE FAERM and PREMISES … SHEPHERDS HOUSE FARM and PREMISES … LADGATE FARM and PREMISES, at Brotton aforesaid, containing 100 A, 2R 26P, of the annual value of £30, in the occupation of William Farndale … A MESSUAGE or DWELLING HOUSE

A FARN HOUSE and Outbuildings, and about 35 Acres of Arable, Meadow, and Pasture Ground adjoining, called “Ladgate Farm”, in the occupation of William Farndale

It appears that there was a reservation for ironstone and minerals and a railway from Brotton to join the Middlesbrough and Guisborough Railway was intended to pass close to the farm leased by William Farndale:

The Vendors reserve the right to themselves of working and taking away ironstone and other minerals, upon the whole or any part of the Premises, and the right of making Tramways and other Roads for taking and carrying away the same, but they will pay the purchaser of any Lot any surface or other damage he may sustain thereby. A railway is in the course of formation from Brotton to join the Middlesbrough and Guisborough railway at Guisborough, and is intended to pass over or close to the farms in the occupation of Henry Eliot and William Farndale. Another Railway is about to be formed, to join the North Yorkshire and Cleveland railway, at Ingleby, with the Middlesbrough and Guisborough railway, at or near to the Nunthorpe station, which will pass through the Wood Land and Premises at Easby

William and Jane moved from Brotton to Marske by 1871. William looks to have become a cartman in Marske after being an agricultural labourer in Brotton for most of his life, with a short spell as a farmer of 34 acres. William died in 1876.

William Farndale aged 75, a cartman of Saltburn, Marske died of heart disease and chronic bronchitis, on 20 February 1876. John Purdy, step son of the deceased was present at the death (DC).

William Farndale, of Saltburn, aged 76 was buried at Brotton on 23 February 1876. James Bell, the Rector presided. (Saltburn PR).

Did Jane try to run a grocery business after William died, but struggled with liquidation?

The London Gazette: LIQUIDATIONS BY ARRANGEMENT. … Jane Farndale, Saltburn by the Sea, grocer

1881

Census 1881 – 18 Ruby Street, Marske (Jane appears to have moved but to another property in the same street)

Jane Farndale, laundress, 60

Richard Agar, boarder, widower, Gardener’s Assistant, 40 (born at Stellington, York)

Sarah Agar, 7, boarder

So it seems by 1881, William had died, and her daughter Hannah had died, but Hannah’s widower and their young granddaughter Sarah, boarded with Jane.

1891

Census 1891 - 11 Ruby Street, Marske;

Jane Farndale, Matron; widow; age 73; b Hartlepool (1818).

William George Farndale, son age 25; born Brotton (FAR00421).

Also

Flora Williams, grandau; age 21; born Saltburn

Sarah Agar, grandau; age 17; born Saltburn

Florence Williams, grandau; age 7m; born Guisborough.

Who were Flora and Florence Williams? Daughters Mary and Sarah had died by 1871, so can’t have married again. Hannah had died in 1875. So the Williams children cannot have been granddaughters?

1900

Jane Farndale, William’s widow, was buried in Saltburn Cemetery on 2 January 1900.
