Daily Gazette
for Middlesbrough, 26 February 1916: PROVED AN ALIBI. CHARGE AGAINST A GREAT AYTON MAN DISMISSED. John
R Foster, hay and straw dealer, of Great Ayton, came
before the Stokesley bench on Saturday on a charge of being on enclosed land in
pursuit of game and assaulting a gamekeeper, named Garbett Frankland. The
keeper said that on February 12th between 10 and 11 pm, he heard shots fired in
Holly planting, which is on his employer’s estate, and which joins the
defendant’s land. On going there he saw Foster with a
gun and game bag, it was a moonlit night. Witness charged him with shooting
game, and when he stepped towards Foster, the latter levelled his gun and
threatened him. Mr A E Forbes, Middlesbrough, for the defence, called defendant
and two other witnesses. Foster said he was not out of his home on the night
in question, and
had not handled a gun for six weeks. His statement was borne out by his
son, Fred foster, and by John Farndale, a joiner of Ayton. The case was
dismissed.
North Star (Darlington),
28 February 1916:
POACHING CASE DISMISSED. John Robert Foster, a well known hay and straw dealer, of Great Ayton, was
charged at Stokesley on Saturday with being on enclosed land in pursuit of
game, and assaulting Garbett Frankland, a gamekeeper. Garbett Franklin
stated... For the defence, Mr Forbes called defendant and two other witnesses. Defendant
said he was not out of his house after nine o’clock on the night in question
and had not handled a gun for six weeks. John Farndale, a joiner, of Great
Ayton, and Fred foster, defendant’s son, bore out this statement, and
the case was dismissed.
John Farndale was mobilised on 30 May 1916 and posted to the Heavy Artillery
Depot at Woolwich on 30 June 1916. His character was very good. On 1 October
1917 he was appointed wheeler and posted to RSG Sheerness Garrison. He was at
Ripon in April 1918. There was a medical
board held in April 1918 and he appears to have been transferred to the
Reserve. He was certified
a skilled wheeler.

1924
Could John Farndale have
been known as Jack, and could this be Jack Farndale, a joiner in 1924. He would
have been aged 42 which is possible. I can find no other Johns or Jacks of Great Ayton who this might be. Albert
Ingledew may have been his brother in law, so this
seems right.

Cleveland Standard, 14
June 1930: GREAT
AYTON CARNIVAL. Great Ayton, with all its regrettable unemployment, is
making a great effort to raise funds to proceed with the repair of the fabric
of the parish church. A carnival and motor gymkhana is
being organised to take place on Saturday, 14 June, when it is anticipated
that a record crowd will be present. The effort is in the hands of the
parochial church committee, who have been successful in enlisting the services
of Mr A K Cumbor, whose ability and organising events
of this character is so well known and highly appreciated, and who is supported
by the Vicar, the Rev W Lawson Smith, and Mr J Farndale. The gymkhana has
been specially arranged by Mr. Porter, of the Synthetic and Nitrates Limited, Billingham,
whilst the attractive and novel posters advertising the event have been
cleverly designed and executed by Miss Walsh, a local 17 year
old artist.
