on 7 June 1915
Address was Fir
Cottage, Huttons Ambo, Yorkshire. He
was 21 and a farm servant. Single. He was originally enlisted into 176th
(Leicester) Brigade Royal Field Artillery. His Descriptive
Report have his next of kin as his father, James Farndale. He was 5 feet
and 6.5 inches tall.
1916
He was posted to
238 Brigade, RFA from May 1916. He was in
France with the Expeditionary Force. This was also confirmed in his Identity
Certificate on discharge.
His Medical
document confirmed that he was a farm worker before he joined the Army.
On 4 June 1916
his brother (it is not clear from the signature which one) wrote
a letter to the Secretary of State asking for any news of John who the
family had not heard from for some time. His address was given as 28839 JW
Farndale, R Battery, A Sub, 8th London Brigade RFA, 47th
Division, BWEF, France.
His Active
Service record shows he travelled to Le Havre from Southampton on 8 and 9
January 1916 and was in the Field with R Battery (later D Battery 235th
Brigade RFA).

He was
demobilised in March 1920.
He had a clean
conduct sheet.

born on 30 November 1893, was a farm assistant on Bellmore Farm, Whitwell (1939 Register).
1940
John W Farndale
married Marion Tate in 1940 and their marriage was registered in the fourth
quarter of 1940 (GRO Vol 9d page 1127).
Marion Hatfield
was the daughter of Thomas Pears Hatfield (1860 to 1934) and Jane (nee Askwith)
Hatfield (1854 to 1899) and she had married Sydney James Tate on 30 November
1918. Sydney Tate had died on 17 February 1927 at Low Catton.

died on 25 June 1971 (Monumental Record, Probate
Index).
1973
