Form – Active Service showed that he had enlisted on 10 December 1915, aged
18 years and 9 months, a clerk. He was a Primitive Methodist
by religion. Army Pay Corps. His next of kin was his mother, Mary A
Farndale, of 19 Temple Street, Middlesbrough.

His Medical
record on 8 August 1916 showed that he was a clerk, 5 feet and 5 5/8th
inches tall, 119 lbs with good physical development. He was declared fit for
service at home and transferred to 43rd Training Reserve Battalion.
