Private, 1/2 East Anglian Area Field Ambulance Company, Royal Army Medical

Attested
on 16 September 1913 at Norwich, age 17 years and 2 months (in fact he was 16,
so perhaps gave an older age in order to enlist?), a tinsmith at Barrow Works.
He lived at 19 Onley Street.
The
Gallipoli campaign, the Dardanelles campaign, the Defence of Gallipoli or the
Battle of Gallipoli was a military campaign in the First World War on the
Gallipoli peninsula (now Gelibolu) from 19 February 1915 to 9 January 1916. On
17 February 1915, a British seaplane from HMS Ark Royal flew a
reconnaissance sortie over the Straits. Two days later, the first attack on the
Dardanelles began when an Anglo-French flotilla, including the British
dreadnought HMS Queen Elizabeth, began a long-range bombardment of
Ottoman coastal artillery batteries. Royal Marines were landed to destroy guns
at Kum Kale and Seddülbahir, while the naval
bombardment shifted to batteries between Kum Kale and Kephez.
After the failure of the naval attacks, troops were assembled to eliminate the
Ottoman mobile artillery, which was preventing the Entente minesweepers from
clearing the way for the larger vessels. Kitchener appointed General Sir Ian
Hamilton to command the 78,000 men of the Mediterranean Expeditionary Force (“MEF”). Scheduled for 23 April but postponed until 25 April
due to bad weather, landings were to be made at five beaches on the peninsula.
1919
There
is a record on 7 May 1919 of his bounty of £15, with £5 for present use and £10
to be issued subsequently as laid down in the Army Order.
His Medal
Records show he served in the
Balkans and was awarded the Victory Medal and British War Medal and 15
Star. He was demobilised on 3 August 1919.
