1905, he judged a gardening competition:
Norwich
Mercury, 15 July 1905: SCHOOL BOYS’ GARDEN COMPETITION. Exhibition of home grown
flowers by the boys of the Crook’s Place was held in their gardens on the
western side of Chapel Field on Wednesday. The gardens were in excellent order,
and were greatly admired by members of the Education Committee and others who
were present. The competitive classes attained a good general level of merit,
considering that the exhibits were all cottage grown. The geraniums were
particularly meritorious, and there were some sturdy begonias. In the cut
flower section sweet peas were the most noticeable feature, but they were not
sufficiently well arranged. The wild flower classes were well contested. The
judging was done by Mr Farndale and Mr Burtonshaw,
who awarded the prize is as follows...
