Matthew Farndale was born on 27 June 1827 (see gravestone), the son of George and Mary (nee Armstrong) Farndale (FAR00215) of Marton, farmer, baptised, Marton-in-Cleveland. He was baptised 22 July 1827 (Marton PR).

1841

 

The Census of 1841 for Long Newton, Stockton listed Matthew Farndale, aged 12; servant to John Farndale (FAR00217, his uncle) aged 45. He was working on his uncle’s farm.

1850

 

The York Herald, 16 February 1850; MARTON (CLEVELAND) PLOUGHING MATCH. An interesting meeting was held at Morton, on Friday, the 8th instant, for testing ploughmen and ploughs, not only of the district, but the whole country … Fourteen ploughs were entered for the competition. The field chosen for the trail was on the farm of Mr W Dale, near the road from Middlesbrough to Stockton .. The ploughing began about none o’clock and concluded about three o’clock. The public were not admitted to the field until after the judges had made their decisions …AWARDS … Third Prize, £1, to Matthew Farndale, ploughman to Mr W Loftus, Ormesby, Ransome’s Plough.

 

1851

 

The Census for 1851 for East Coatham, Kirkleatham listed Matthew Farndale, aged 22; unmarried; an agricultural labourer and lodger with the Wray family; born Marton.

1855

Matthew Farndale aged 27, bachelor, labourer of
Skelton, son of George Farndale (FAR00215), labourer, married Ann Readman aged 21, by licence, spinster of Coatham, daughter of John Readman, joiner at Christ Church, Coatham, on 20 October 1855 (Marriage Certificate). Matthew and Ann signed. The witnesses were Rolf Carrick and Jane Lewis. John Postlethwaite was the Rector.

George Farndale (FAR00451) was born at East Coatham on 5 December 1862 and baptised on 18 December 1862 (Coatham PR, Birth Certificate).

John Thomas Farndale (
FAR00473) was born and baptised at East Coatham on 22 March 1866 (Coatham PR and birth certificate). There is an annotation in the margin against this and several adjacent sentries which reads Private in Sickness. He was born at 1.15 am in the morning.

FAR00490) was born at Coatham on 30 August 1868 and baptised on 3 January 1869 (Coatham PR, Birth Certificate).

The Stockton Herald, South Durham and Cleveland Advertiser, 2 March 1872: EAST COATHAM. TO BE SOLD BY AUCTION, at the house of Mr John Hikeley, the Lobster Hotel, East Coatham, in the county of York, on Saturday March 2nd, 1872, at Three o’clock in the Afternoon …all that parcel of ground situate at East Coatham, in the County of York, now used as a Timber Yard, together with Timber Sheds, Saw Mill, Joiner’s shop, and other buildings … and also all those three several Messuages or Dwelling Houses, situate at East Coatham aforesaid, together with the Outbuildings and Appurtenances thereto belonging, and now in the several occupations of Matthew Farndale, John Readman. And Joseph Readman

 

1873


The Whitby Gazette, 1 February 1873:  PLOUGHING MATCHES. The Lofthouse and District Ploughing Matches took place in a field belonging to Messrs Farndale at Kilton, on Thursday January 23rd. The ploughing was considered exceptionally good and resulted as under … District Class – 1. Mr Matthew Farndale, Kilton, 2. Mr Martin Farndale, Kilton … Dinner was provided by Mrs Farndale, Kilton

 

Since Mathew Farndale (FAR00225) had left for Australia by this stage, the ploughman in first place must have been this Matthew Farndale.

 

Ann Farndale run a Temperance Hotel at Saltburn. The Redcar and Saltburn News, 11 September 1873 (and numerous other publications):

The Northern Weekly Gazette, 14 May 1874: TRADE DIFFERENCES. THE CRISIS IN CLEVELAND. A Council meeting was held at Mr Farndale’s Temperance Hall, Saltburn, on Saturday, when a resolution was passed, the practical result of which is, that the ironstone miners of Cleveland, cease working, and the whole iron industry of the North is threatened with a shock from which it will not easily recover.

 

The Jarrow Express, 6 June 1874: THE STRIKE IN CLEVELAND. There is little change to report with regard to the strike in this district. The men still stand out against the reduction … A meeting of the Miner’s Association was held on Wednesday, in Farndale’s Temperance Hotel, Saltburn …

 

The York Herald, 8 June 1874: Saltburn: According to announcement the Miner’s Council consisting of delegates from each lodge in the Cleveland and Rosedale Districts, met this morning at Farndale’s Temperance Hotel in this town.

 

The York Herald, 19 June 1874: THE CLEVELAND AND ROSEDALOE IRONSTONE MINERS. MEETINGS OF THE MINERS AND MINOWNERS – PROBABLE EARLY TERMINATION OF THE STRIKE – WILLINGNESS TO ACCEPT THE 12 1/2 PER CENT REDUCTION AT MANY LODGES. … To support this proposition the delegate at once set out for Saltburn, where the Council meeting, which was numerously attended, was held at Farndale’s Temperance Hotel

 

The Darlington and Richmond Herald, 27 June 1874: … On Saturday morning, a Council meeting of the Association was held at Farndale’s Temperance Hotel, Saltburn, when the delegates reported the decision of their various lodges. A resolution was passed, and Mr Grieves proceeded to Middlesbrough, and the following communication was handed to the Secretary of the Mine Owner’s Association: “CLEVELAND MINERS’ ASSOCIATION. “Carried unanimously at council, June 20, 1874, That we accept the employers’ terms offered on June 18th, 1874 …”

Matthew’s wife, Ann was admitted to Clifton Hospital asylum in York on 8 August 1889. Her next of kin was Matthew Farndale, a labourer. They were still living at 10 Allerton Terrace, Coatham.

Matthew Farndale, aged 77 died on 7 January 1905 and was buried at Christchurch,
Coatham on 11 Jan 1905 (Coatham PR, GRO Vol 9d page 369). The family were still living at 10 Allerton Terrace at that time.

The gravestone in
Coatham Churchyard reads: ‘Matthew Farndale born 27th June 1827 died 7th January 1905 also his wife Ann, born 7th July 1834, died 24th August 1898, also their daughter Mary born 4th November 1855, died 26th March 1899. Annie (Farndale) died 11th July aged 75 years.’
