1796

 

John Farndale, the son of John and Jane Farndale (FAR00196) of Brotton, a farmer, was born on 16 March 1796 and baptised at Brotton on 27 March 1796 (Brotton PR & IGI). There was a suggestion he was the son of John & Jane (nee Pybus) Farndale (FAR00167), but this seems wrong.

 

1827

 

John Farndale of the Parish of Kildale & Elizabeth Wallace of Hinderwell Parish were married by licence on 30 December 1827. The witnesses were William Hodgson, Sarah Jefferson. (IGI entry states Wallis) (Brotton PR & IGI). John was aged 31 at his marriage.

John and Elizabeth had a family of ten.

 

1829

 

John Farndale (FAR00305), son of John & Elizabeth Farndale of Kildale, labourer, was baptised at Kildale on 30 August 1829.

 

1830

 

In 1830 a Bill of indictment for felony was issued against Hannah Bradley and Jane Mark both single women, lately of the House of Correction at Northallerton, for stealing three pecks of wheat value 3s, the property of John Farndale. The offence was committed at the parish of Skelton on 6 October 1830 and the Bill was endorsed with names of witnesses and "a true bill" (Yorkshire archives, Document reference QSB 1830 4/6/4, 1 piece - Catalogue status, Draft).

1831

 

In 1831 under the will of Masterman Patto, 1. Dorothy Patton, Elizabeth Patton and Mary Ann Patton all of Mount Leaven, par. Yarm, spinsters (3 of the daughters and residuary legatees named in the will of Masterman Patton, late of Mount Leaven, gent., deceased) 2. William Hugill of Eston, yeoman, and John Farndale of Skelton, yeoman (trustees and executors named in the will of Masterman Patton) By the will of Masterman Patton, dated 7 July 1831, 1 are entitled to a legacy of £300 each and to certain shares in the money to be produced by the sale of testator's real and personal estate They also have the option of electing to occupy testator's farm in the parish of Yarm, on such conditions as they and the executors may agree, subject to an agreement for furnishing testator's brother, John Masterman, with coal and coin during his life. 2 have the power to sell testator's farming stock and crop, dairy vessels and husbandry implements to such of his daughters as should become tenants of the farm 1 have elected to continue the farm, and have agreed a yearly rent of £160 with 2, and to purchase the stock, crop and implements for £401 5s. 8d. The sum of £401 5s. 8d. is still owing by 1 to 2 and they have borrowed the further sum of £48 14s. 4d. from their father's estate upon the security below Now, in consideration of the total sum of £450, 1 assign to 2 the said legacies of £300 each and all other benefits under the will produced by sale of the real and personal estate or otherwise, upon trust, at their discretion, to sell and dispose of the legacies, to apply the money towards their costs and the repayment of the £450 with interest at 5%, and to hold the surplus in trust for 1 Signed by 1 Date 6 Nov 1833 (Yorkshire Archives Document reference ZQY 1/6/2 Title Miss Hall of Stokesley papers:  Assignment of interest Level - Not filmed).

George Farndale (FAR00333), son of John and Elizabeth Farndale, was born in Barnby in 1835.

 

1837

 

Mary Farndale (FAR00339), daughter of John and Elizabeth Farndale, farmer, was born at Roxby in 1837.

 

1838

 

Jane Farndale (FAR00340), daughter of John and Elizabeth (nee Wallace) Farndale, ag lab of Coatham, was born at Roxby in 1838.

 

1839

 

Peter Wallis Farndale (FAR00343) son of John Farndale, farmer of Roxby and Elizabeth Farndale formerly Wallis was born at Whitby on 14 February 1839. He must have died young.

 

1840

 

Hannah Farndale (FAR00348) was born in the last quarter of 1840.

 

1841

 

By the 1841 Census the family were at Scaling, Hinderwell (near Roxby). John Farndale, 40, farmer born in Yorks (ie 1796 - 1801). Elizabeth Farndale, 30, born in Yorks (ie 1811). John Farndale,11, born in Yorks (ie 1830) (FAR00305). George Farndale, 6, born in Yorks (ie 1835) (FAR00333). Mary Farndale, 4, born in Yorks (ie 1837) (FAR00339). Jane Farndale, 4 (FAR00340).

1843

 

Sarah Farndale (FAR00357) was born and died in 1843.

William Farndale (FAR00369A) was born in 1845.

Sarah Farndale (FAR00368A), daughter of John and Elizabeth Farndale, of Roxby was born in 1846.

 

1847

 

Peter Farndale (FAR00373) son of John Farndale, farm labourer of Kirkleatham and Elizabeth Farndale formerly Wallis, was born at Kirkleatham  in 1847. His older brother Peter had died in 1840, which explains why John named a later child Peter too.

 

1851

 

John Farndale might have suffered bankruptcy in 1851. The Globe on 19 March 1851 listed insolvent practitioners including John Farndale, Middlesbrough, labourer. The Era on 23 March 1851 also listed insolvent practitioners including John Farndale, Middlesbrough, labourer. Aris’s Birmingham Gazette, on 14 April 1851 under Examinations of Insolvents, listed John Farndale for the list for 15 April as referred to him as John Farndale. Middlesbrough, Yorkshire, late a farmer, and now a labourer and merchant. Perry’s Bankrupt Gazette, for 31 May 1851 referred to FARNDALE, John, of Middlesbrough, labourer and merchant, 17 June ten pr, county court Stockton. The Durham Chronicle, for 27 June 1851 for the County Court Circuit before H Stapylton, Esq, Judge, at Stockton on 17 June 1851 referred to 72 causes for trial with a number worthy for publication including John Farndale. It said that the insolvent came up for his final order. Mr Fawcett, of Yarm, appeared to produce accounts under an assignment made for the benefit of creditors. The assignment weas executed by a great majority of the creditors, and the object of the petition was protection against those who had not come in. A dividend of 3s 4d in the pound was paid under it. His Honour, after hearing the evidence, granted the final order.

 

That year, the 1851 cenus listed the family at West Coatham, Kirkleatham. John Farndale, head; 53; married; born in Brotton; Elizabeth Farndale, his wife; 41; married; born in Roxby; (ie born 1810); Mary Farndale, daughter; 15; unmarried; born Roxby (FAR00339); Jane Farndale, daughter; 13; unmarried; born Roxby  (FAR00340); Sarah Farndale, daughter; 7; unmarried; born Roxby  (FAR00368A); William Farndale, son; 5; born West Coatham (FAR00369A) and Peter Farndale, son; 3; born West Coatham (FAR00373).

 

1861

The 1861 census showed the family living in Stockton. John Farndale, Head; 64; married; was an iron foundry labourer; Elizabeth Farndale, his  wife, 52; Sarah Farndale, 17 (FAR00368A); William Farndale, 15; was a general clerk to a solicitor; (FAR00369A); and Peter Farndale, 13; was also a general clerk to a solicitor (FAR00373).

1868

 

John Farndale died, aged 72, when living at 8 Queen Street, Stockton. He died ‘of natural decay’ on 28 October 1868. Sarah Farndale present at the death.
