1834

 

Robert George Farndale, son of Henry and Elizabeth Farndale, a labourer (FAR00229), was baptised at Stainton-in-Cleveland on 9 February 1834 (Stainton PR). His father was a ‘Hind’ at Barwick (near Stainton).

 

When Robert Farndale was born, his father, Henry, was 38 and his mother, Elizabeth nee Appleton, was 35.

Stainton is now in SW Middlesbrough.

He
married Mary Butterwick on 5 October 1862 in Hartlepool, Durham.

 

Robert Farndale, aged 26, a bachelor, a shoemaker of West Hartlepool, son of Henry Farndale (FAR00229), a farmer, married Mary Butterwick aged 21, a spinster of West Hartlepool, by banns daughter of William Butterwick, a blacksmith at the Parish Church West Hartlepool, on 5 Oct 1862 (Marriage Certificate). Robert signed, Mary made her mark. Witnesses John Farndale (his mark) (presumably his brother, FAR00302) and Barbara Beckett (her mark).

In 1892, Robert George Farndale was involved in the
proposal of Christopher Furness, a steamship owner and shipbuilder, as the liberal candidate for West Hartlepool:

1895

 

Northern Guardian (Hartlepool), 24 October 1895: THE MUNICIPAL ELECTIONS. NOMINATION DAY. The nominations for the municipal elections closed this afternoon at West Hartlepool. In the central ward Councillor C McFarlane JP is the only candidate nominated, and has been allowed a walkover.... NORTH EAST WARD... 1898

 

He had a low period in 1898: Northern Guardian (Hartlepool), 19 January 1898: NON PAYMENT OF RATES. An old man named Robert Farndale was summoned at the West Hartlepool Police Court this morning for non payment of improvement and highway rates amounting to £1 16s 10d. It was stated that great efforts had been made to recover the money, but in vain. A distress warrant was issued, but it had been returned endorsed “no goods.” Farndale was ordered to be sent to gaol for 14 days in default of payment.

 

1900


He
died on 14 January 1900 at the age of 67, in West Hartlepool.

 

Robert George Farndale aged 67, Master Boot and Shoe Maker, of 30, John Street, West Hartlepool, died of pneumonia at 18 Benson Street, West Hartlepool, on 14 January 1900. William Farndale, his son, was present at the death. (Death Certificate)
