1869

Henry Farndale was born on 5 March 1869 (1939 Register), the son of Robert and Mary (nee Butterwick) Farndale (FAR00326) born Hartlepool District. He was baptised on 19 September 1869 West Hartlepool (West Hartlepool PR). Henry Farndale’s birth was registered in Hartlepool District in the first quarter of 1869 (GRO Vol 10a page 162).

When Henry Farndale was born in 1869, his father, Robert, was 36 and his mother, Mary nee Butterwick, was 26.

1892

Henry Farndale married Elizabeth Armin 1892 when he was aged 23 and the marriage was registered at Hartlepool in the third quarter of 1892 (GRO Vol 10a page 176).

Elizabeth Armin was the daughter of John Armin (1834 to 1910) and Sarah (nee Carling) Armin (1836 to 1911). She was born in West Hartlepool in or about 1872.

Ethel Farndale (FAR00666) was born in 1894 and baptised on 1 July 1894 (Hartlepool PR and see also Elaine Farndale's family tree). Ethel Farndale’s birth was registered in Hartlepool District in the third quarter of 1894 (GRO Vol 10a page 121).

Hilda Farndale (FAR00672) was born on 13 November 1895 (1939 Register). Hilda Farndale’s birth was registered in Hartlepool District in the fourth quarter of 1895 (GRO Vol 10a page 166).

1897

Edith Farndale (FAR00680) was born on 19 August 1897 (1939 Register) in Hartlepool, Durham. Edith Farndale’s birth was registered in Hartlepool District in the third quarter of 1897 (GRO Vol 10a page 182, also Elaine Farndale's family tree).

1899

Olive Farndale (FAR00692) was born on 22 January 1899 in Hartlepool, Durham (1939 Register). Olive Farndale’s birth was registered in Hartlepool District in the first quarter of 1899 (GRO Vol 10a page 165, also Elaine Farndale's family tree).

1901

The 1901 Census for Middlesbrough listed Henry Farndale, aged 32, a boarder and working as a barman; with Elizabeth Farndale, aged 28; Ethel Farndale, aged 6; Hilda Farndale, aged 5; Edith Farndale, aged 3; Olive Farndale, aged 2.

1902

Henry Farndale (FAR00714) was born on 25 April 1902 (1939 Register). Henry Farndale’s birth was registered in Hartlepool District in the second quarter of 1902 (GRO Vol 10a page 194)(Elaine Farndale's family tree).

1904

John Armin Farndale (FAR00728), was born on 22 March 1904 (1939 Register). John Armin Farndale’s birth was registered in Stockton District in the second quarter of 1904 (GRO Vol 10a page 65).

1906

Doris Farndale (FAR00736) was born on 24 March 1906 (1939 Register). Doris Farndale’s birth was registered in Stockton District in the second quarter of 1906 (GRO Vol 10a page 69).

1909

Robert George Farndale (FAR00755), was born on 14 February 1909 (Stockton PR). He was the son of Henry and Elizabeth (nee Armin) Farndale (FAR00495). Robert George Farndale’s birth was registered at Stockton District in the first quarter of 1909 (GRO Vol 10a page 89).

1911

The 1911 Census for 27 Sunderland Street, West Hartlepool listed Henry Farndale, aged 42, a shipwright’s labourer; Elizabeth Farndale, aged 39; Ethel Farndale, aged 16, assistant at a fish dealer; Hilda Farndale, aged 15; Edith Farndale, aged 13; Olive Farndale, aged 12; Henry Farndale, aged 8; John Armin Farndale, aged 7; Doris Farndale, aged 5; Robert George Farndale, aged 2.

James Armin Farndale (FAR00778) was born in Hartlepool on 1 September 1911 (1939 Register). The birth was registered in Hartlepool District in the fourth quarter of 1911 (GRO Vol 10A Page 221, Email 22 January 2003 from James Farndale, his son).

1913

William Farndale (FAR00796) was born on 21 February 1913 (1939 Register) in West Hartlepool (census), Durham. His birth was registered in Hartlepool District.  

Henry played Association Football. The Hartlepool Northern Daily Mail, 21 November 1913 reported: Bentley Red Rose v Roker Street – Bentley Red Rose … half backs: J Butler, H Farndale and R Norris …

1915

Henry’s wife, Elizabeth died in Hartlepool on 26 April 1915 (GRO Vol 10a page 147). The Hartlepool Northern Daily Mail, 29 April 1915 reported: FARNDALE – On 26th inst, at 27, Sunderland Street, Elizabeth, dearly beloved wife of Henry Farndale, aged 43 years – Internment on Saturday, cortege to leave 2 o’clock. Deeply regretted.

Elizabeth Farndale (FAR00814) was born in 1915. It seems likely that Elizabeth died in childbirth.

1916

There was an H Farndale reported as a deserter, but who rejoined. The Police Gazette, Tuesday 24 October 1916: MEN REPORTED AS DESERTERS OR ABSENTEES (War Office and Admiralty) who have REJOINED or who for any other reason, are NOT to be Apprehended: … Farndale, H, stoker RNR, Pembroke, previously advertised in the Police Gazette on 17 October 1916. He seems to have been in the Royal Navy reserve serving on the Pembroke.

1921

The 1921 Census for Hartlepool listed Henry Farndale, 52, a widower, born West Hartlepool, Able Seaman, Mercantile Marine, Eagle Oil Transport Company registered at Finsbury Circus London (out of work); Olive Farndale, 22, single, born West Hartlepool, home duties; Henry Farndale, 19, born West Hartlepool, single, general labourer with E A Fortlind Timber Merchants of Fountain Terrace, West Hartlepool; John A Farndale, 17, born Stockton, Coggie Tram Driver at plate rolling mills, South Durham Steel and Iron Company, out of work; Robert G Farndale, 12, born Stockton, in full time education; James A Farndale, 9, born West Hartlepool, in full time education; William Farndale, 8, born West Hartlepool, in full time education; Elizabeth Farndale, 6, born West Hartlepool, in full time education.

Eagle Oil and Shipping Company was a United Kingdom merchant shipping company that operated oil tankers between the Gulf of Mexico and the UK. Weetman Pearson, 1st Viscount Cowdray founded it as the Eagle Oil Transport Company in 1912 and sold it to Royal Dutch Shell in 1919. It was renamed Eagle Oil and Shipping Company in about 1930, and remained a separate company within the Royal Dutch Shell group until it was absorbed in 1959.

The 1939 Register for 26 Robin Street, Bradford listed Henry Farndale, born 5 March 1869, a retired seaman, widowed; Henry Farndale, born 25 April 1902, single, public works contractor’s labourer; Doris North (nee Farndale), born 24 March 1906, fly frame spinner; and James A Farndale, born 1 September 1911, general labourer.

The Hartlepool Northern Daily Mail, 19 June 1941: GREATHAM. The Late Mr C Hanby. The funeral took place yesterday of Mr Christopher Hanby, for many years licensee of the Bull and Dog Inn, Greatham, who died in the Cameron Hospital, West Hartlepool last Friday … A service in St John’s Parish Church, Greatham, was attended by many of Mr Hanby’s friends and members of the West Hartlepool Licensed Victuallers Association - … those present included … Mrs Farndale …

1952

Henry Farndale died in December 1952 in Bradford, Yorkshire, at the age of 83 and his death was registered at Bradford in the last quarter of 1952 (GRO Vol 2b page 131).
